The ceremony began at 10.30am in the ceremonial room, soon after the arrival of Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak and the Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Bainun.

Orang Kaya Temenggong Paduka Raja Datuk Seri Wan Fathir Wan Hussain, who represented the bride’s family, paid homage to Sultan Azlan Shah and sought his permission to begin the ceremony.

This was followed by the entrance of the royal court attendants with the dowry (mas kahwin) from Raja Nazrin for his bride. This consisted of 250gm of gold wafers and eight trays of gifts, including a diamond ring.

In return the bride’s delegation, led by Datuk Tunku Hamdy Tunku Ahmad Tajuddin, handed over 11 trays of gifts, including a silver ring, to Raja Nazrin’s younger brother Datuk Seri Raja Ashman Shah.

At 11am, the 50-year-old Raja Nazrin, resplendent in a white Baju Melayu and sampin, calmly sat cross-legged on a yellow cushion in front of Perak Mufti Datuk Seri Harussani Zakaria and pronounced the akad nikad once without faltering.

The solemnisation was witnessed by Raja Ashman, Datuk Seri Mohd Salleh Ismail, the husband of Datuk Seri Raja Azureen who is Raja Nazrin’s sister, and some 200 guests.

Moments later, Raja Nazrin went to the next room where 34-year-old Zara, stunning in a lightly coloured long kebaya, was waiting for him to slip the wedding ring on her finger.

Zara kissed Raja Nazrin’s hand while he lovingly kissed her lightly on the forehead.

It was a touching scene at the end of the ceremony as Zara hugged her relatives and wiped away tears of joy, while a beaming Raja Nazrin was congratulated by his siblings and other members of the royal family.

The ceremony was broadcast live to a media centre at Sungai Perak Resort.

Later in the afternoon Raja Nazrin paid a short visit to the media centre and chatted with several of the more than 100 journalists stationed there.

He also inspected the preparations being made for the Jamuan Rakyat, scheduled to be held at the Arena Square, today and tomorrow.
